CANAL TOWN VILLAGE SENIOR CITIZENS HOUSING
Chesapeake City, MD (1994)
This FmHA sponsored project contains 30 modest rental apartments for low and middle-income senior citizens. The client’s intentions were to provide a comfortable and affordable dwelling place that would go beyond the norms of subsidized housing. Architecturally, this is attempted by developing a form that aims to be simple and straightforward functionally, yet resembles a dense village echoing the character of the nearby small town. A collection of interconnected house-like structures flank a central corridor…a metaphorical village street. The street leads to the “square”, the clock-towered public gathering space at the entrance of the building. Individual apartments are compact; designed with an emphasis on light, views and easy circulation. Much of the site remains an open meadow with walking paths to landscaped nodes around the perimeter of the grounds.
Architecture Frames, Stages and Prompts human activity.
