Homes and housing are central to secure living. Well-designed home architecture supports poetic dwelling on an everyday basis. While many clients seek large and elaborate houses (dream houses), John Lucas Architect is more interested in the design of moderate size or small homes. The small home seems more capable of being aligned with its site and its owner's personality. Small home design challenges the imagination and requires economy of space and means. Many of our multi-family projects (apartments) are thought of as groupings of smaller houses into a single grander entity (Canal Town Village Seniors Housing and Palmer Apartments, Villa 369...both in northern Maryland.) Our portfolio includes numerous small houses in Maryland, North Carolina, Alabama and Pennsylvania, many of which have received design awards. Sometimes the small house is a retreat or getaway; sometimes it is a primary residence. In contemporary America, the "small" house is from 1000 square feet to 2500 square feet of area.
